 STRANGE DEVELOPMENT

Strange Development är ett nytt performanceverk av och med Tana Maneva. En scenisk synergi mellan teater, butoh och dans, ett visuellt, poetiskt och transgressivt uttryck.

Strange Development is a performance about relationships, society, personas and their shadow. Our fellows are diving into the roots of relationships and feelings, into the root of an emotion, the root of a gesture or a single word. It’s about the space behind and beyond the words.

 Tana Maneva in her own words:

“Strange Development examines the reasons and feelings behind our social masks. It is a mythical journey of a seven heroes in search for deeper meaning of life, hungry souls, unsatisfied with shallowness in daily robotized life with the prison of persona and social mask. The fellows desperately strive to  extract meaning from life. Squeezed by the rules of social order and proper behaviour, they are longing to belong to something bigger and more significant, longing for recognition, beauty and love. For a deeper meaning of existence.

We see their superficial personas cracking under the pressure of social demands. We see their cracked faces, cracked bodies and costume. They are erupting into emotional crisis, showing the real face behind the mask, letting all their inner dissatisfaction flood their life and relationships, going from one extreme to another, striving for balance and perfection.

Strange Development is very much about our repressed, deeper side. Some call it a Dark side, I call it a Night mind. The Мind that appears when there is a crack. The Mind that contains our wild instincts, real reasons, fears and prayers, our  dreams and  imagination. The realm beyond the words and social constructions, belongs to the Nigh mind, another dimension. This realm is more fundamental and ancient, and it fascinates me deeply. The realm, which unites opposites, where fears and hopes dissolve and transcend in surrealistic pictures which  hold deeper meaning, beyond the words and intellectual concepts. Here, everything is reduced to symbols which unfold and develop strangely from our Daily Mind perspective. The characters are constantly walking between these two worlds, the Daly mind world and the Night mind world, swaying between sky and earth, striving for recognition and freedom of expression.  

The Flowers 

   The Flowers in the performance are symbol of our  striving attempts to extract life, beauty and meaning  from each other and from our surrounding.”
